1-May-07 ![]() AEI leads the industry in new way of working UK-based AEI Cables is leading the cable making industry by introducing new ways of working using methods that are normally found in the Japanese car industry. All employees at the plant in Birtley, County Durham, are participating in improvements in workplace organisation using 5C - clear-out, configure, clean to check, conformity and custom and practice. With this involvement, the whole site is now participating in some way in the company’s continuous improvement programme. AEI Cables continuous improvement manager Peter Baynham said: “This is causing some major changes in the way we work but we believe the efficiency and safety improvements will be well worth it.” “Manufacturing is now focused on our production centre at Birtley and as a result the layout and storage of the whole plant is being challenged. Every area of the plant is someone’s responsibility, and we are already seeing some marked improvements. There are benefits all the way down the line from the staff, the management and ultimately for the customer.” The 5C disciplines have been adopted as a foundation to support the overall improvement programme which also includes refining and standardising working practices to reduce waste. The roll-out follows work by AEI Cables with the North East Productivity Allilance through One NorthEast, the local Regional Development Agency. AEI Cables managing director Derek Mansfield said: “We are quickly starting to see that this programme has wide benefits all the way down the line. If we work more efficiently then this is passed on to the customer and that gives us great satisfaction. “The cables industry is still very traditional in many of its working methods but we believe we should never stand still.” NOTES TO EDITORS
