Specialist Cables are Lowered into place for Tower Power

Passers-by looked on as specialist cables from AEI Cables were winched above a new major city centre landmark before being lowered down a lift shaft into position.

The Mineral Insulated Cables delivery for Beetham Tower in Birmingham city centre was gently lifted and lowered down into position ready for installation.

The cables – recognised as the ultimate in fire performance to meet and exceed all requirements of BS 5839-1 (02) – are being used as the main source of emergency power supplies for lift shafts on each floor of the building and for apartments.

The Beetham Tower project is a 38 storey mixed-use tower, with the lower 18 floors being a new 220-bed Radisson SAS conference hotel and floors 19-38 being taken up by 158 luxury apartments. The tower will act as a catalyst to redevelop a large urban block in Birmingham's prime central core.

For applications where fire protection in essential circuits is of paramount importance, AEI Cables’ MIC exceeds all safety requirements and continues to operate in a fire and transmit data.

The cable was supplied through Express Electrical Distributors’ Aston branch in Birmingham and the contractor was Rotary North West Ltd.
